I believe that research, like art, literature, and music, is a cultural activity. Those engaged in research should enjoy it, and in turn, research should bring joy to others. At the same time, it enhances the collective wisdom of humanity and generates economic value. In other words, research is a form of play that also produces practical benefits from a hobby.
However, to reach this state, an intense and focused start is necessary in the beginning. Enhancing and honing the skills necessary for research, such as experimentation and writing papers, makes research very enjoyable. This is true not only for research but also for other cultural activities, business, and work. Success in one field strangely leads to success in another field.
In our laboratory, we support the growth of students who aim to take off at such a top level. While there are few restrictions, this requires high aspirations and self-discipline on your part. We hope you will set goals and strive towards them. We also actively encourage studying abroad. We believe that in the future, there will be no world closed off to our country alone; we aim to cultivate individuals who can thrive internationally.
The 21st century is said to be the era of carbon. This is because this commonplace element is versatile, stable, lightweight, and contributes to the creation of new energy devices for this century. Specifically, we are conducting research to create new solar cells and fuel cells using nanocarbon materials such as fullerenes and carbon nanotubes. We are working with the belief that success in this research could change the world. One keyword is electrons; the structure, reaction, and function of materials can all be explained by electrons. From organic chemical materials to applied physical devices, we aim to understand everything about electrons integratively, crossing the boundaries of fields, and eventually surpassing the framework of research. We are looking for students who wish to create future carbon-based energy devices and thrive internationally.
